When given the chance, the theme of my work is nature. For this project, I was encouraged to use any medium to create the spread for a children’s book illustration. I have shown nature in various physical and digital media, but have never used it as a medium itself. What you see, with the exception of the piece of paper used for the sky, is completely organic material from my woods and a very helpful local florist. Robins are a classic symbol of the beginning of spring, so I wanted to depict the transition between the seasons.
This project gained media attention. To read an article in which I was quoted and my work is shown, please click here!

Recipe Cards

Any chance to combine my love of photography and design is a chance that I am going to take. A commercial photography food shoot turned into this recipe card box set. I only shot one “sweet” and one “savory” but I think it would be fun to create enough recipe cards to fill a real box!

A Type Chronology Book
For this project, I designed informational pages and posters for a type chronology book. The book gave readers insight on the different classifications of type, the years they were used, their characteristics, and an example alphabet. My job was to organize this information in a visually appealing but easily understood way (aka the job of a graphic designer). For the posters, I had to show at least one letter of the alphabet and the name of the example typeface I was using. I decided to bleed the letterform into the white of the information page, creating closure. I also aligned the top of the letterform with the rule on the information page to unite them and create continuation. Once the project was complete, I printed, trimmed, and assembled the book. My favorite projects are the ones that result in something that I can physically hold, and this one was no different.
After the book, the next project was to make posters for a lecture about type. I had to make two, and each one had to include the name of the font, the font’s alphabet, use letterforms as graphics, and contain information about the lecture. I also had to apply color to the design, and keep the pallet limited to only a few colors. I had a lot of fun balancing the dynamics of my designs, creating alignments, and making closure between the type and the large letterform graphics.
